E. Douglas Lewandowski, PhD., has been appointed Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Research at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. He assumes the leadership from former co-Directors Drs. Solaro and Dudley, who remain vigorous participants in this highly successful Center.
Dr. Lewandowski holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Chicago. He received his Master of Science in Physiology from the University of Illinois and completed his PhD in Radiological Sciences at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Prior to joining UIC in 2000, he was on the Harvard Medical School Faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Lewandowski, who is Professor of Physiology & Biophysics and Medicine, has served as Director of the Integrative Cardiac Metabolism Program.
Dr. Lewandowski has a record of very great accomplishment as a scientist and scholar. In 2010 he was selected as a Fellow of the American Physiological Society, Cardiovascular Section and is also an Inaugural Fellow of the American Heart Association Basic Science Council. He maintains many editorial board appointments to prestigious scientific publications including Circulation and the American Journal of Physiology. His innovative research program exams cardiovascular physiology and biochemistry through nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging along with metabolic regulation by enzyme activity and expression in intact tissues.
