Data Management Program
Introduction
The Data Management Program at UI COM is a strategic initiative co-led by Yoon Soo Park and Nick Kane to unify institutional data, enable advanced analytics, and improve cross-departmental collaboration. This effort was shaped by a 2024 review of data practices across all campuses and aims to reduce time spent managing inconsistent data.
Purpose of the Data Stewards Council
The Data Stewards Council is a newly established standing committee responsible for governing the College of Medicine’s data. Its core functions include:
- Sponsoring data initiatives
- Developing and enforcing data standards
- Reaching agreement on data meaning and use
- Advocating for data governance across the COM community
The Council brings together domain experts in Student, Academic, and HR data, alongside IT and analytics leaders. Additional domains will be added over time.

Representatives
Data Dictionary Effort
To promote a shared understanding of data across the College, the Council is supporting the Data Dictionary Effort. This initiative will:
- Define and document key data elements, including regional variations
- Combine technical specifications with functional definitions
- Focus initially on core data needed for Acuity integration, such as:
- Student Demographics: preferred/legal name, UIN, academic level, graduation date
- Course Catalog: CRN, title, faculty, schedule
- Grades/MSPE: course dates, grading rubrics, final grades, dual degree status, LOA, repeats, adverse actions
The Data Dictionary will serve as a source of truth for data governance and quality assurance across UI COM.
