Philip Bertulfo

Philip Bertulfo is the creative force behind so much of what the College of Medicine community sees and remembers. He spends endless hours filming events across the College, making sure that every conference, graduation, match ceremony, and COM gathering is captured and preserved with professionalism and care. He also takes headshots for faculty and staff—helping everyone put their best foot forward.

What makes Phil’s contributions extraordinary is that he handles all of this on his own (although more recently, we’ve had amazing help from Lonso!). From setup, to filming, to editing, to distribution—he manages every detail. The results look like the work of a full production team, but it’s really Phil working tirelessly behind the scenes.

His commitment goes far beyond technical skill. Phil is thoughtful, dependable, and collaborative. He makes sure every person he works with feels supported, and he often anticipates needs before others even realize them. His work quietly elevates the entire College, creating a polished and professional presence that reflects the excellence of our community.

Phil’s dedication, creativity, and hard work make a tremendous difference, and it is a joy and privilege to recognize him for all that he does.

John Colagrossi

John is a very dedicated, caring, and ethical UIC employee and mentor. His vast university system experience enables him to make well-informed administrative decisions, and he strives to do the right thing, even if it is not the easy thing. For example, he was instrumental with SAIL’s implementation of several complex payroll processing changes earlier this year.

John’s strong sense of ethics in accounting and administration is clear to others, and his teaching background shines through when he is given an opportunity to instruct new employees and existing coworkers on how to complete different processes properly and accurately. His selflessness and dedication to ethical accounting has made him an excellent steward and reliable leader at SAIL.

Carolina Gallegos

Positive Health Solutions, Peoria campus

Carolina has shown incredible dedication to both her clients and her professional growth. While carrying a full caseload, she successfully completed her master’s degree this August and balanced her internship project, which focused on identifying barriers that keep non-English-speaking and undocumented clients from accessing mental health services. Her work reflects a true commitment to advancing equity and accessibility in care.

As the only Spanish-speaking case manager in the department, Carolina plays a vital role in creating a welcoming and safe environment for Spanish-speaking clients. She is always willing to step in and translate when needed, and many clients have shared how much comfort they feel having a case manager who understands their language and culture. Carolina exemplifies excellence, collaboration, and integrity in her work and is an invaluable member of the Positive Health Solutions team.

Onesima Martinez

Onesima has been providing pre & post-award services to the Center for Dissemination and Implementation Science (CDIS) on a temporary basis for the past 2 months. She has a limited number of hours to give to us, but she has filled every moment with dedication and hard work. Onesima stepped into a position at CDIS that had been unfilled since March and required a lot of attention. She told me “Once I make a commitment, I’m 100% in”. I have seen that come true daily. She has comprehensively reviewed all of our grants, brought us up to date with billing, and helped us submit multiple applications. Onesima has made a huge difference to the productivity of CDIS, and we are tremendously grateful for the time and energy she has provided us.

Riya may have only joined Positive Health Solutions in January, but she has quickly proven herself to be an outstanding case manager and teammate. In just a few months, she has taken on two specialties—perinatal and housing—and has gone above and beyond to support clients in both areas.

As the Positive Health Solution (PHS) Housing Manager, Gina has consistently demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment to supporting unhoused and homeless individuals by overseeing the seamless coordination of housing placements, case management, and wraparound services. Through strategic partnerships with community organizations, landlords, and city agencies, Gina has successfully expanded access to safe, stable, and dignified housing solutions for PHS clients. Gina’s proactive approach to crisis intervention, housing navigation, and individualized support plans has led to measurable outcomes, including increased housing retention rates and improved quality of life for PHS clients. By fostering a client-centered environment and empowering both staff and residents, Gina has cultivated a culture of compassion, accountability, and transformation that aligns with the mission of PHS to end homelessness with dignity and care.

I was having an issue with my MS Teams Bookings. Roberto received my email and promptly acted on my request for assistance. Although not totally versed in MS Teams Bookings, Roberto researched the problem and together we worked through many possible solutions. After a lot of time spent (!!) Roberto resolved the issue. He did an outstanding job, and I could not help acknowledging his professionalism at his job.

Ginger Gray

For the past three months, Ginger has independently managed the Procurement and Expense Contract Department with exceptional grace, professionalism, and dedication. During this time, she has single-handedly processed all purchase orders and expense contract requests, while also successfully completing three out of the five strategic plans under her leadership.

In addition to these responsibilities, Ginger has overseen the management of all (P/T) cards, ensuring campus-wide compliance with institutional policies. Now, she is also successfully training a new member of the procurement team—all while continuing to manage her full workload and maintain a high standard of accuracy, accountability, and service. Her outstanding commitment and work ethic continue to make a significant impact across our operations.

Kathleen Helling

Kathleen Helling is very deserving of a KUDOS recognition.  She is one of the hardest working individuals I have worked with in my almost 30 years in medical education.  Her work is always done impeccably well and in an efficient manner.  She doesn’t get bothered by projects that can appear overwhelming.  Kati worked with me to develop an organized process to send out over 1,300 emails to all the community faculty and resident physicians who work with our 3rd year clerkship students.  She was not intimidated like I was but rather carefully thought through what needed to be done and developed a great approach which we will continue to use in future years.  Kati also helps run our Chicago Phase 2/3 Curricular Subcommittee.  That subcommittee reviews over our 160 clinical electives and reviews all new electives.  That is a complex process of making sure that electives in different stages of the review process continue to be reviewed in a systematic manner.  Her communication to all those involved in the review process is amazing.  Kati is already accountable for the work assigned to her and her level of customer service is second to none.

Aidan Kernochan

Ron is an excellent team lead whose knowledge of ViewPoint, Syngo, PACS, and other imaging-related applications is second to none. He is always willing to help, whether it is early in the morning or late in the day, and his quick responses keep our systems running smoothly. I am happy to be working with Ron and learning from him, as he knows the infrastructure of our systems extremely well. His guidance and willingness to share his expertise make a big difference for both me and the team. Edward is a breath of fresh air to the department! From day one, he has been EXCEPTIONAL at knowing the ins and outs of the department and being extremely communicative. After a 6-week construction project in our department offices, we returned to offices and a conferences room that were in need of a greater than normal amount of cleaning. Rex thoroughly cleaned all of the office spaces, dusting, vacuuming furniture and floors and providing replacement items as needed. He did this all very quickly as four people needed to move back into their offices. His efforts and timely response made our return to our offices go smoothly.

National Center for Rural Health Professions, Rockford campus

These two employees – Beth and Lisa – put on the National Center for Rural Health Professions’ Rural Health Careers Camp. The Rural Health Careers Camp is a three-day overnight educational program for rural health school students interested in learning about the healthcare field. This year, they had 50 high school students from 18 rural northwest IL high schools. The camp was held at NIU. Beth and Lisa work tirelessly to make the camp educational, inspiring, and fun! The planning of the sessions (over 15 different health professions represented with interactive sessions!), to recruiting students and counselors, their energy is infectious and inspiring! The NCRHP and UICOMR is so lucky to have these two and their ability to really make our institution shine! Thanks Beth and Lisa!

On Wednesday, April 30th, we lost power to our server room and everything shut down. The Peoria CIS team was able to resolve most of the issues, but there were 2 domain controllers managed by Chicago that we could not get into. We reached out to Andre Pavkovic, who included Ken Lloyd in the conversation. They verified that it was Tech Solutions-managed equipment, and they recommended Dave Uher. We contacted Dave Uher, and he was more than happy to help us out. He was able to help the team get the units back up and running.

This all happened late in the day, and everyone was more than willing to help out. We really appreciate the all-hands-on-deck response they gave us here in Peoria.

Nicole DiVittorio

Department of Administration, Office of Educational Affairs, Chicago campus

In her role as Educational Program Evaluation Coordinator, Nicole has expanded the capacity of our team.  In addition to the timely processing of evaluations across the curriculum, Nicole has led the process of building our curriculum map on a new platform. Nicole has also facilitated connecting students across campuses for SCB tri-campus reports and the Independent Student Analysis. She is a responsive and effective communicator. We are lucky to have her in the UI COM community!

Tabitha Duncan

Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology, Chicago campus

Tabitha Duncan deserves to be recognized for her unwavering dedication to her transplant colleagues and patients. As a nurse practitioner, Tabitha consistently demonstrates extraordinary teamwork, a positive attitude, and remarkable hard work. She has been instrumental in supporting the go live of our new post-chronic patient care structure. She has given strong advice about the operational changes and helped the team remain positive.

Laura Hermosillo

Department of Urology, Chicago campus

Laura exemplifies multiple UIC core values a few examples are as follows:

Excellence: She is very thorough when she reviews the schedule. She is knowledgeable and will review past notes to make sure the patient has completed the ordered imaging/lab results that were requested. This assures the patient/provider will make the most of the visit and can discuss the results and update the treatment plan accordingly. This helps the day flow SO much better, and the clinic run more efficiently!

Collaboration: She collaborates with the multidisciplinary team and helps the patients connect with radiology or different providers in the department when needed. She is forward thinking and appropriately questions things that seem out of place.

Accountability: She follows through on a task until there is resolution. We have become very comfortable that the assignment will be done correctly, thoroughly and completely when she is working on it.

Communication: She closes the loop of communication by informing as needed when tasks are completed or when there is additional information or work up needed.

Customer Service: She is very timely in her task completion. She also is always pleasant and professional with the patient and team. She has a very courteous demeanor and is easy to work alongside. A true pleasure to work with.

Often the problems and issues of a department are immediately brought to the forefront. At times the ones who are doing a great job and working diligently are overlooked. I just want to ensure that Laura knows her hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed! She deserves KUDOS!!

Stephanie Hornbuckle

A patient’s mother reached out to me to ensure that I knew that Stephanie went above and beyond securing documents that were being requested for the patient. She said that Stephanie checked back in with her frequently to ensure that she understood what was needed and made sure that she was updated in terms of the process. Way to go, Stephanie!

Warren Marchbank

Warren is always so responsive and reliable! I often have these last minute “emergencies” related to getting set up for class or connecting to a computer and he consistently responds and saves the day! He is professional, very competent in his job and has a calming effect in times of stress.

Angela O’Bryant

Department of Health Sciences Education and Pathology, Peoria campus

While planning a mental health event for the Urban Medicine Mini Medical School program, Angela demonstrated a genuine commitment to collaboration in bringing her vision to life. She actively sought input from both Urban Medicine students and community members to ensure the event truly reflected the needs and experiences of the Peoria community. With thoughtful attention to detail, she incorporated engaging, multi-sensory activities—including a drum circle, therapy dogs, a smoothie station, art, and more—designed to captivate and educate 4th-7th graders. Through these experiences, students will not only learn about the importance of mental health but also leave with practical tools and meaningful reminders to prioritize their well-being.

Michelle Olvera

We are happy to have Michelle Olvera working at the UIC Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. In a short time, she has handled numerous tasks with discipline and skill. With her expertise in customer service, she continues to tackle challenges with dignity and respect. She works closely with the GI Fellowship Director, Hepatology Transplant Fellowship Director, Assistant GI Fellowship Director, and GI Research colleagues, organizing online communications and meetings, setting up interviews, and scheduling in-person special events while creating an atmosphere of camaraderie. We enjoy her energy and hard work. She is a tremendous asset to an already great team!

Emily works on multiple projects in the research division of our department and she’s an asset to each project. I truly appreciate her organizational skills and her willingness to take initiative on project tasks. Finally, Emily brings positive energy to our division and is a pleasure to have as a colleague and collaborator.

Dawneva Sasse

Dawneva has done a truly outstanding job planning and executing a wonderful Rural Student Physician Program (RSPP) banquet. The evening was a celebration of our students’ hard work and accomplishments, where they were honored with scholarships, medals, and recognition for being part of the RSPP program. It was clear that many hours of thoughtful planning and dedicated effort went into making this event a success. Preceptors from across the state attended to support both the program and our students, and Dawneva’s extraordinary communication and coordination made it all possible. Pulling off an event of this scale requires the collaboration of many departments, and Dawneva worked tirelessly to ensure a seamless and meaningful evening—not just for the preceptors, but for our students as well.

Thank you, Dawneva, for your unwavering commitment and the passion you bring to everything you do. You’ve created a memorable experience that will stay with our students and guests for a long time.

Raven Simpson

Raven began her role as a new behavioral health navigator for our department and very quickly proved herself to be an invaluable member of the team.  She collaborates incredible with colleagues both in and outside of the program and I consistently get positive feedback from both patients and providers she works with.
