Erik Mahlberg

Erik has recently taken on the complex task of organizing several on-site faculty interviews, including those for an out-of-state candidate. This involved coordinating schedules for multiple stakeholders with busy schedules, planning a detailed 2.5-day itinerary with dinners, travel arrangements, city tours, and both virtual and in-person interviews. Most recently, Erik faced numerous challenges—scheduling conflicts, flight changes, and last-minute interview cancellations—but handled each obstacle with grace, professionalism, and patience.

Cheryl McKearin

It is hard to believe that Cheryl has only been with us for eleven months, because she has made herself completely indispensable to the College of Medicine’s three campuses. She brings a fun energy to the Office of Educational Affairs even as she works tirelessly and brilliantly to do so much: migrate the College to a new learning management system, make our online materials accessible for people with disabilities, develop our new office website, get us ready for a new software platform for scheduling and assessment, conduct and organize faculty development, and do just about any project needed. Philip Bertulfo

Philip Bertulfo is the creative force behind so much of what the College of Medicine community sees and remembers. He spends endless hours filming events across the College, making sure that every conference, graduation, match ceremony, and COM gathering is captured and preserved with professionalism and care. He also takes headshots for faculty and staff—helping everyone put their best foot forward.

What makes Phil’s contributions extraordinary is that he handles all of this on his own (although more recently, we’ve had amazing help from Lonso!). From setup, to filming, to editing, to distribution—he manages every detail. The results look like the work of a full production team, but it’s really Phil working tirelessly behind the scenes.

His commitment goes far beyond technical skill. Phil is thoughtful, dependable, and collaborative. He makes sure every person he works with feels supported, and he often anticipates needs before others even realize them. His work quietly elevates the entire College, creating a polished and professional presence that reflects the excellence of our community.

John is a very dedicated, caring, and ethical UIC employee and mentor. Carolina Gallegos

Positive Health Solutions, Peoria campus

Carolina has shown incredible dedication to both her clients and her professional growth. While carrying a full caseload, she successfully completed her master’s degree this August and balanced her internship project, which focused on identifying barriers that keep non-English-speaking and undocumented clients from accessing mental health services. Her work reflects a true commitment to advancing equity and accessibility in care.

As the only Spanish-speaking case manager in the department, Carolina plays a vital role in creating a welcoming and safe environment for Spanish-speaking clients. She is always willing to step in and translate when needed, and many clients have shared how much comfort they feel having a case manager who understands their language and culture. Carolina exemplifies excellence, collaboration, and integrity in her work and is an invaluable member of the Positive Health Solutions team.

Onesima Martinez

Onesima has been providing pre & post-award services to the Center for Dissemination and Implementation Science (CDIS) on a temporary basis for the past 2 months. She has a limited number of hours to give to us, but she has filled every moment with dedication and hard work. Onesima stepped into a position at CDIS that had been unfilled since March and required a lot of attention. She told me “Once I make a commitment, I’m 100% in”. I have seen that come true daily. She has comprehensively reviewed all of our grants, brought us up to date with billing, and helped us submit multiple applications. Onesima has made a huge difference to the productivity of CDIS, and we are tremendously grateful for the time and energy she has provided us.

Through strategic partnerships with community organizations, landlords, and city agencies, Gina has successfully expanded access to safe, stable, and dignified housing solutions for PHS clients. Ginger Gray

For the past three months, Ginger has independently managed the Procurement and Expense Contract Department with exceptional grace, professionalism, and dedication. During this time, she has single-handedly processed all purchase orders and expense contract requests, while also successfully completing three out of the five strategic plans under her leadership.

In addition to these responsibilities, Ginger has overseen the management of all (P/T) cards, ensuring campus-wide compliance with institutional policies. Now, she is also successfully training a new member of the procurement team—all while continuing to manage her full workload and maintain a high standard of accuracy, accountability, and service. Her outstanding commitment and work ethic continue to make a significant impact across our operations.

Kathleen Helling is very deserving of a KUDOS recognition.  She is one of the hardest working individuals I have worked with in my almost 30 years in medical education.  Her work is always done impeccably well and in an efficient manner.  She doesn’t get bothered by projects that can appear overwhelming.  Kati worked with me to develop an organized process to send out over 1,300 emails to all the community faculty and resident physicians who work with our 3rd year clerkship students.  She was not intimidated like I was but rather carefully thought through what needed to be done and developed a great approach which we will continue to use in future years.  Kati also helps run our Chicago Phase 2/3 Curricular Subcommittee.  That subcommittee reviews over our 160 clinical electives and reviews all new electives.  That is a complex process of making sure that electives in different stages of the review process continue to be reviewed in a systematic manner.  Her communication to all those involved in the review process is amazing.  Kati is already accountable for the work assigned to her and her level of customer service is second to none.

Ron is an excellent team lead whose knowledge of ViewPoint, Syngo, PACS, and other imaging-related applications is second to none. He is always willing to help, whether it is early in the morning or late in the day, and his quick responses keep our systems running smoothly. I am happy to be working with Ron and learning from him, as he knows the infrastructure of our systems extremely well. His guidance and willingness to share his expertise make a big difference for both me and the team. Rex Jeffers

After a 6-week construction project in our department offices, we returned to offices and a conferences room that were in need of a greater than normal amount of cleaning. Rex thoroughly cleaned all of the office spaces, dusting, vacuuming furniture and floors and providing replacement items as needed. He did this all very quickly as four people needed to move back into their offices. His efforts and timely response made our return to our offices go smoothly.

Lisa Masseron and Beth Squires

National Center for Rural Health Professions, Rockford campus

These two employees – Beth and Lisa – put on the National Center for Rural Health Professions’ Rural Health Careers Camp. The Rural Health Careers Camp is a three-day overnight educational program for rural health school students interested in learning about the healthcare field. This year, they had 50 high school students from 18 rural northwest IL high schools. The camp was held at NIU. Beth and Lisa work tirelessly to make the camp educational, inspiring, and fun! The planning of the sessions (over 15 different health professions represented with interactive sessions!), to recruiting students and counselors, their energy is infectious and inspiring! The NCRHP and UICOMR is so lucky to have these two and their ability to really make our institution shine! Thanks Beth and Lisa!
