Policy on Formative Assessment (Required Clerkships)

Definitions

Formative feedback: Information communicated to a medical student in a timely manner that is intended to modify the student’s thinking or behavior in order to improve subsequent learning and performance in the medical curriculum. (Element 9.7)

Policy

At approximately the halfway point of any required clerkship four weeks or longer in duration, students are expected to meet with a clinical faculty member or resident to review their performance and receive formal feedback.

Students whose clinical performance is not meeting expectations by the midpoint of any required clerkship four weeks or longer in duration must be advised by a clerkship faculty member that they are at risk for failure of the clerkship and counseled on steps for improvement.
