Two University of Illinois College of Medicine Faculty Members Named Fellows of Drexel University College of Medicine’s National Leadership Program

The University of Illinois College of Medicine is proud to share that two of its faculty members have been named fellows of Drexel University College of Medicine’s National Leadership Program.

Heather Heiman, MD, Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and Professor of Medicine and Medical Education has been accepted to the 32nd class of fellows in the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) program. This prestigious program is dedicated to preparing leaders for senior-level executive roles in schools of medicine by developing the professional and personal skills required to lead in today’s complex health care environment. The ELAM program has been specially developed for senior faculty at the associate or full professor level who demonstrate the greatest potential for assuming executive leadership positions at academic health centers within the next five years.

Dr. Heiman earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from Harvard University and practices academic internal medicine in the Primary Care Plus clinic, where she focuses on care of patients with chronic medical conditions. Within the College of Medicine, Dr. Heiman developed the physician house advising model to enhance students’ professional development by providing individual, longitudinal physician advising to every student from the first day of their medical education. She came to UI-COM after serving as medical director of the Clinical Education Center at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, where she advanced standardized patient-based education and assessment. She currently chairs the approval committee for the Longitudinal Knowledge Assessment in Internal Medicine for the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Paul Chan, MD, MSc, MBA, FACS, Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, John H. Panton, MD Professor, and Director of Pediatric Retina and ROP Services has been accepted to the fourth class of fellows in the Executive Leadership in Health Care (ELH) program. The ELH program is designed for senior-level leaders interested in advancing in hospitals and health care systems to positions such as CEO and CMO. This program builds upon the fellowship model to include strategic concepts, tools, and skills to empower leaders to bring their full potential to health care organizations.

Dr. Chan earned his Doctor of Medicine Degree from Temple University School of Medicine. His clinical practice focuses on vitreoretinal surgery, serving as Director of the Pediatric Retina and Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Service at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Chan is committed to global health initiatives with a focus on both surgical training and education for the diagnosis and management of retinal disease. His primary research interests focus on utilizing new technology and imaging techniques to better evaluate and manage pediatric retinal disease. Additionally, Dr. Chan is an active member in a number of major ophthalmic societies, including the American Eye Study Club, the American Ophthalmological Society, the Club Jules Gonin, the Retina Society, the Macula Society, the Vit-Bukle Society, the Association of Pediatric Retina Surgeons, and the American Society of Retina Specialists.

To be accepted into Drexel’s National Leadership Program, each fellow must be nominated and supported by the dean or another senior official of their institution.
