The Faculty Academic Advancement Committee has completed the first phase of its self-study on faculty diversity. The data compilation, Women in Medicine at UIC, 1997-2004, was obtained from the College of Medicine’s faculty data base. Additional analyses are underway.
Annually, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) compiles statistics from their roster of faculty at the 125 US medical colleges/schools. Their 2005-06 report Women in U.S. Academic Medicine (published October 2006) along with a PowerPoint presentation of the data and individual tables can be obtained from the AAMC website via the link below.

Policy & Program Advocacy
In addition to supporting life-friendly policies already in place, FAAC has endorsed efforts to expand life-friendly policies.
- Infant & Toddler Care – FAAC supported a campus-wide survey to assess the need for infant and toddler care, which revealed substantial demand for the services. For access to the July 2006 report click here.
- Pro-rated Tenure – This policy would give a part-time tenure-track faculty member a tenure clock that reflects their part-time status.
Departmental Transformation
The Departmental initiative on Faculty Development focuses on faculty development efforts at the departmental level. To meet the Dean’s goal of improvement on gender equity and diversity, departments must –
- Develop and submit a Departmental Action Plan for Faculty Development to the Dean
- Report twice a year on progress toward the objectives outlined in their action plan
To facilitate this process, each department has a FAAC facilitator. These departmental facilitators are the link between their department and the Faculty Academic Advancement Committee and the leader of their department’s faculty development initiative.
