The College of Medicine Office of Student Financial Aid (COM OSFA) lists anticipated expenses on your Financial Aid Federal Loan Offer Letter when you complete a FAFSA application. These expenses, referred to as your Cost of Attendance (COA) or budget, reflect costs you may encounter during the 12-month academic year. These costs may include:

- Disability Insurance

The total COA is not the amount you owe the university for the year. Some items in your COA are estimated indirect variable costs not owed to the university. Please note that an average federal loan fee will be added to your COA for those that borrow a Federal Direct Loan and a Federal Grad Plus Loan. The amount of the loan fee(s) added will depend on the type of loan borrowed.

Financial Aid Notification:
Initial Financial Aid Notifications for prospective/new students will be sent in March prior to the start of your M1 year via the student portal. This will include aid for the Fall and Spring Semesters. Summer aid will be added to the Financial Aid Notification in spring of each academic year.

We encourage students to use a budget to help you live within your means. Creating a budget helps you reach your future financial goals by minimizing your student loan debt. Students can use the following UIC COM Monthly Budget Tool to create a budget prior to signing a lease or accepting loans on the Financial Aid Award Notification.

Outside Resources
If you receive any type of funding (awards, grants, waivers, fellowships, scholarships, or tuition reimbursements), you must notify our office as soon as possible. Your aid package will be updated to reflect the outside award. Your loan amounts may be adjusted to remain within the COA budget constraints. Please note, you cannot receive more than one full-tuition award for any term.
NOTE: If an award is credited to your account before we can adjust your financial aid package, you will be expected to return any amount of financial aid you are not eligible to receive, even if you have already received a refund.

Paying Your Bill
Your university bill is managed by the University Bursar’s Office. You are responsible for reviewing your student account and making sure your bill is paid each semester by the Bursar’s published due dates. Visit the University Bursar homepage to find out more information about the following: billing, payments, due dates, refunds, UIC financial counselor (Entrance and Exit Interviews), 1098-T tax information, payment plans, and the new student checklist.

Budget Adjustments
In addition to the standard budget components, certain adjustments can be made to a student’s COA on a case-by-case basis. Students with extenuating circumstances may submit a request for budget adjustment for allowable expenses.

- Residency Interview Travel Costs (fourth-year students only)
The federal government stipulates that some expenses cannot be included in a student’s budget, regardless of the circumstances.
