About UICOM

Founded in 1913 with medical roots dating back to the late 1800s, the University of Illinois College of Medicine (UICOM) is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and is one of the largest, public medical schools in the U.S. With approximately 1,400 students enrolled across its three campuses in Chicago, Peoria, and Rockford, students have the unique opportunity to learn in rural and urban environments with integrated curriculum that is delivered simultaneously across all three. When you apply to UICOM, you are applying to the UICOM system, and will be placed on one of our three campuses, all which offer the same UICOM diploma. All campuses offer the same quality educational experience while each offers a unique environment based on the local culture, partner organizations, and patient populations.

The goal of the MD program at UICOM is to educate exemplary physicians and physician scientists to serve the diverse populations and medical needs of the people of Illinois, the nation, and the global community.

At UICOM, we achieve this goal through an innovative and evolving curriculum that integrates the basic, clinical and social sciences, and through a learning environment that emphasizes self-directed, individualized, and experiential learning. We prepare our graduates to provide compassionate patient care; to demonstrate effective interprofessional collaboration, leadership, and advocacy in health care; to provide care for underserved urban and rural populations; and to translate research discoveries into clinical practice.

Clinical Training

Our medical students receive extensive clinical experience which begins in the first two years of their medical education. At all three campuses, students learn best-practices for treating a wide variety of patients, from rural to urban populations. All of our clinical education programs offer focused, skill-building experience in community clinics, major teaching hospitals and other diverse settings.

Students develop and practice the critical skills to be a comprehensive clinician with human-based and technology-based experiential learning, including at the Simulation and Integrative Learning (SAIL), Jump Trading Simulation & Education Center and at the Surgical Innovation Training Laboratory.

Education (Dual Degree; Scholarly Concentration Programs)

The UICOM’s MD program prepares students for the practice of medicine with an outstanding science education and extensive clinical experience. Match & Residency

Match: Graduates of UICOM pursue residencies at many of the nation’s top medical institutions in a wide variety of specialties, ranging from internal medicine to neurosurgery. For more information on Match results, please visit the Chicago, Peoria, and Rockford Match pages.

Residency: As one of the largest medical schools in the country, UICOM offers more than 60 residency programs for nearly 1,000 residents across our three campuses which prepare doctors for specialties such as nephrology, orthopedic surgery, family medicine and more. These residents are a critical part of the education community at UICOM.

Research

Medical students have many opportunities to work with professors and fellows who are furthering the practice of medicine with new knowledge about diabetes, cancer, tropical parasitic infections, gene regulation, women’s health, neurosciences, and much more. Investigators across the College of Medicine are doing cutting-edge research in clinical medicine, in basic biomedical science, and in the translation of basic findings into clinical practice and societal health. An example of our excellence in research training is the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) which trains students for a career as a physician scientist and is offered at the Chicago campus. Three-Campus Model

The three-campus model of matriculation is an outgrowth of our mission, which is to advance health for everyone. Illinois as a state consists of a large urban center in Chicago, the country’s third largest city, and smaller urban and rural communities throughout. For that reason, with campuses in Chicago (180 students), Peoria (65 students), and Rockford (55 students), we are not only able to serve a diverse group of patients, but we are able to give our medical students well-rounded clinical exposure that allows them to explore their interests and passions, whether it be in the big city or a more intimate rural environment with urban centers.
