Income Driven Repayment (IDR) Plans Update
According to the Department of Education, IDR plan and consolidation applications are now back online:
“…as of March 26, 2025, the online IDR application is once again available for eligible borrowers to apply for the Income-Based Repayment (IBR), Pay As You Earn (PAYE), and Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR) Plans. The online loan consolidation application is also available again,” a Federal Student Aid post states. “Although the IDR application is now available, loan servicers are still updating their systems in accordance with the court’s actions. Servicers will begin processing applications in the near future. We will continue to update this page when new information becomes available, including when servicers resume processing IDR applications.”
Due to the ongoing SAVE court proceedings, forgiveness under the SAVE Plan, as well as under the Income Contingent Repayment and Pay As You Earn plans, remains temporarily blocked while a legal ruling is awaited on the SAVE Plan’s validity. During this period, affected borrowers have been placed into forbearance status, which means no payments are required, no interest accrues, but unfortunately, credit does not count toward PSLF. New details on impacts as a result of the latest SAVE Court action from February are available here, along with information on recertification deadlines.
For the most current information on updates to income-driven repayment plans, including the SAVE Plan, borrowers are encouraged to regularly check communications from the Department of Education and their loan servicers.”
