Record Research Activity Drives Sponsored Funding Above $190 Million Annually
The University of Illinois College of Medicine received $190.4 million in research, instructional, and other sponsored program funding during the 2021 fiscal year, a 9.5% increase over fiscal year 2020. College of Medicine awards represented more than 42% of University of Illinois Chicago’s total sponsored funding in fiscal year 2021.
Federal awards account for $169.7 million, or 89.1%, of the College of Medicine funding, with the National Institutes of Health providing the largest amount of funding. Non-federal sponsors include the State of Illinois at 2.1% and private sponsors at 7.5% of the total funding. Projects related to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic accounted for $33.6 million of the total funding.
The basic science departments in Chicago collectively were awarded $42.9 million, led by $14.5 million in Pharmacology and Regenerative Medicine and $9.0 million in Anatomy & Cell Biology. Other leading departments included the Chicago Departments of Medicine at $71.8 million, Psychiatry at $18.0 million, Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at $12.2 million, and Emergency Medicine at $8.8 million, and the Peoria Department of Medicine at $5.3 million.
