Three University of Illinois College of Medicine Alumni Recognized at UIC Awards Celebration

Every year, the University of Illinois Chicago Alumni Association recognizes a handful of remarkable alumni. These individuals have achieved extraordinary success in their respective fields and have made notable contributions to their communities. At the 2025 ceremony, three University of Illinois College of Medicine alumni were recognized for their achievements.

Julie Morita, MD '90

Dr. Julie Morita graduated from UI COM in 1990. She is currently president and CEO of The Joyce Foundation, and will serve as the University of Illinois College of Medicine commencement speaker at our ceremony on May 9, 2025. Her many achievements include leading the Chicago Department of Public Health as commissioner, acting as executive vice president of the Roberto Wood Johnson Foundation, and serving as advisor to the White House, U.S. Health and Human Services, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and numerous state and local public health agencies.

Dr. Marygrace Elson, MD '82

Dr. Marygrace Elson graduated from UI COM in 1982. Prior to her retirement, she was the obstetrics and gynecology residency program director at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She is the 2024 recipient of the Iowa Medical Society Merit Award, and which recognizes a physician’s exceptional contributions to the medical profession.

Dr. Claudia Fegan, MD '82

Dr. Claudia Fegan graduated from UI COM in 1982. She is the Chief Medical Officer of Cook County Health where she provides executive oversight for the health system’s medical practices and health policy initiatives. Dr. Fegan also serves as national coordinator of Physicians for a National Health Program.
