About

Janice Tamplin oversees the COM-UHP Medical Student Development Program at the Peoria campus. Her focus is to develop and implement programs that support overall academic excellence for all Peoria campus medical students with a particular expertise in working with students who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM). Ms. Tamplin builds relationships with internal and external partners via her leadership role and working closely with the deans of Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Medical Education and Evaluation and Diversity & Inclusion to ensure students’ success through their training on the Peoria campus. She is a proactive member of the Student Success Team and other college-wide committees. Janice evaluates and recommends policy that impact student learning and training environments; facilitates and supports scholarly activities; provides students with essential enrichment, leadership and professional development opportunities to help them become better learners; offers comprehensive academic support services and resources; serves as a student advocate and assists in the promotion of a diverse and inclusive environment all while designing/conducting appropriate research to monitor progress toward College and departmental goals.

Prior to coming to COM-UHP, Janice worked as an Academic Advisor and Associate Director of Adult Transition Services at Heartland Community College in Normal, Illinois and a Educational Specialist IV and Associate Director of Student Support Services (SSS) in the Students Obtaining Academic Readiness (SOAR) office providing opportunities for academic development to increase college retention and graduation rates and foster a institutional climate supportive of student success, diversity, and inclusion at the University of Texas at Arlington.

She is originally from Peoria, Illinois and earned her Bachelor of Science in Sociology and a Master of Science in Counselor Education from Illinois State University in Normal, IL. Her military background allowed her to travel frequently and work in the Federal Republic of Germany. Her interest include life coaching, student advocacy, academic support and college navigation.
