College of Medicine Sponsored Funding Achieves Record of $205 Million Annually with Increases in Interdisciplinary Research

The University of Illinois College of Medicine received $205.0 million in research, instructional, and other sponsored program funding during the 2022 fiscal year, a 7.7% increase over fiscal year 2021. College of Medicine awards represented more than 44% of University of Illinois Chicago’s total sponsored funding in fiscal year 2022.

Federal awards account for $153.8 million, or 75%, of the College of Medicine funding, with the National Institutes of Health providing the largest amount of funding. Non-federal sponsors include the State of Illinois at 11.4% and private non-profit sponsors at 6.7% of the total funding. Projects related to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic accounted for $16.5 million of the total funding.

The basic science departments in Chicago collectively were awarded $51.2 million, led by $26.9 million in Pharmacology and Regenerative Medicine. Other leading departments included the Chicago departments of Medicine at $60.1 million, Psychiatry at $21.1 million, Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at $12.6 million, Pediatrics at $10.6 million, and Family & Community Medicine at $8.1 million.
