Policy on Preparation of Resident and Non-Faculty Instructors

Purpose: 

To ensure that residents, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other non-faculty instructors who supervise or teach medical students are adequately prepared for their educational roles and familiar with the learning objectives of the courses or clerkships in which they participate, in accordance with LCME Element 9.1.

Overview/ Statement

​​This policy applies to all residents, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other non-faculty instructors who supervise or teach medical students at the University of Illinois College of Medicine across all campuses (Chicago, Peoria, and Rockford) and its affiliated institutions.

Definitions

  • Resident:
    A physician enrolled in a residency or fellowship program at the University of Illinois College of Medicine or affiliated institutions.
  • Non-faculty instructor:
    Graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other individuals who participate in medical student education but are not appointed as faculty members.

POLICY

The University of Illinois College of Medicine requires all residents, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other non-faculty instructors to complete designated training and preparation activities that prepare them for supervising or teaching medical students. The medical school provides resources to enhance teaching and assessment skills and maintains central monitoring of participation in these preparatory activities.

Requirements and Procedures

All residents will receive training that addresses their roles as they pertain to: Supervision and Patient Safety; Assessment and Feedback; Learning Environment and Professionalism; and Teaching Responsibilities and Preparation. Completion of this training is required during orientation/onboarding. Other non-faculty instructors, and all instructors teaching in non-clinical settings, will be oriented by their home departmental faculty supervisors to their teaching roles and responsibilities.

Ongoing training for all residents in required clerkships will be provided annually with: medical school program objectives, specific clerkship learning objectives, required clinical experiences and skills, duty hour policy, UICOM positive learning environment policy, absence policy; and clinical supervision policy.

The Office of Educational Affairs will track and monitor compliance with initial and ongoing training requirements, with each campus collecting and submitting local data to the Office of Educational Affairs.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Office of Educational Affairs will maintain and update the core training content and oversee the central monitoring system. UIC Graduate Medical Education Offices and affiliated institutions will ensure completion of training requirements during orientation, relay completion to the Office of Educational Affairs, and provide lists of residents to allow for communication and tracking from the Office of Educational Affairs.

Standard 9.1: Preparation of Resident and Non-Faculty Instructors – In a medical school, residents, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other non-faculty instructors in the medical education program who supervise or teach medical students are familiar with the learning objectives of the course or clerkship and are prepared for their roles in teaching and assessment. The medical school provides resources to enhance residents’ and non-faculty instructors’ teaching and assessment skills and provides central monitoring of their participation in those opportunities.
